![]() In a will created in April 1813, Peter Van Alen of Kinderhook appointed Lawrence C. Jesse Merwin was a justice of the peace in Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York, from 1813 to 1829. The schoolhouse in Kinderhook, where Jesse Merwin once taught, is now a museum, called The Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse. ![]() Wikipedia indicates that he was born in Milford, Connecticut, on April 3, 1783. His Findagrave memorial, apparently maintained by a relative, indicates that he was born in Kinderhook on 25 August 1784, and was a son of Daniel Merwin and Rebecca (Seward) Merwin. Jesse Merwin and Washington Irving formed a lifelong friendship in 1809 when they were both young teachers who boarded at the Kinderhook home of Judge William Peter Van Ness. Jesse Merwin is said to be the man upon whom author Washington Irving modeled Ichabod Crane, the main character in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. ![]()
